Native Voices, America’s Leading Native American Theatre Company presents the world premiere of “Where the Summit Meets the Stars” by Frank Henry Kaash Katasse (Tlingit). When a near-death experience derails her flight through Southeast Alaska, Rose awakens to find herself in the care of the kind man who pulled her to safety. But who is this mysterious stranger? And how is it possible that she survived? As they journey by boat through the darkness and fog, Rose untangles the mysteries of her past, questions the world around her, and comes to an inescapable crossroads. Native Voices’ “Where the Summit Meets the Stars” is an ethereal Alaska Native story driven by music, dance, and the culture of the Tlingit people. Join the Autry for a conversation with retired County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky, as he discusses his new memoir and his journey from a young social activist to one of the most consequential elected officials in Southern California. Fiercely independent, he combined an activist’s passion with a seasoned politician’s skill to challenge the region’s power brokers, making his memoir an engrossing guide to the history, politics and culture of Los Angeles over the last five decades. All aboard "Line 666," join the Autry in a Halloween storytelling variety show that explores the haunted history of a phantom train line that terrified the Old West. This distinctive evening intertwines spooky short films, haunting poetry, peculiar puppetry and scary stories. "Line 666" presents a distinct blend of creative work in one eerie, slightly experimental narrative. The event features talents who have curated and created work for well-known outfits like the BBC, 20th Century Studios, the Sundance Film Festival, Pioneertown Film Festival, various art galleries around the globe and more. Named in honor of Marshall McKay, former Chairman of the Yoche Dehe Wintun Nation Tribal Council and the first Native person to serve as Chair of the Autry’s Board, the Marshall McKay Seminar seeks to empower Native knowledge by exploring topics that impact Indian Country and beyond. This year’s seminar will focus on Native basketry, emphasizing revitalization and environmental resource management. Native basketweavers, knowledge keepers, scholars and other experts will address these topics during a half-day seminar for the general audience, followed by in-person weaving workshops for a limited number of attendees in the afternoon. The morning speaking event will be open to the public in Autry’s Wells Fargo Theater and live streamed for our online audience. For more information, visit TheAutry.org/Events.
