About the Event

Out of an abundance of caution, the Autry is canceling the screening of What is a Western? Film Series: Screening of Destry Rides Again (1932) and The Range Feud (1931). For those who have paid a fee, refunds will be issued immediately. We will post updates to our website and social media channels regarding any potential rescheduling. Thank you for your understanding during this time.

B-Westerns were one of the most popular genres in Hollywood history, and Tom Mix and Buck Jones were two of the biggest stars of the genre's Golden Age. Destry Rides Again shows how Mix, the King of the Cowboys, handled a story that Marlene Dietrich and Jimmy Stewart took on a few years later. The Range Feud costars Jones with John Wayne, then in the early days of a career that would skyrocket. Introduced by L.A. Times film critic Kenneth Turan.

Destry Rides Again directed by Benjamin Stoloff | Starring Tom Mix, Claudia Dell, and Zasu Pitts | Screened in 35mm

The Range Feud directed by D. Ross Lederman | Starring Buck Jones, John Wayne, and Susan Fleming

This ongoing series explores the wide range of movies that can be considered Westerns, and the ways in which they shape our understanding of the American West. Each screening includes a guest lecturer who will introduce the film and explains its significance in the genre.
