Students answer the question Who Lives in the American West? by coloring a United States map and answering questions about it. Students also make a map or picture that includes the animals, land, plants, people, and water that are important to them.

Teaching Tips for Different Learning Environments
Whole Class In-Person Learning: On class map, teacher reviews elements of a map (compass rose, legend, etc.). Assign groups a different question in Part 2, groups share answers. Students display artwork around class for Gallery Walk.
Whole Class Distance Learning: Teacher reviews elements of a map (compass rose, legend, etc.). Assign groups a different question in Part 2, breakout room groups brainstorm and share answers to class. Students share their own stories online and students pick another person's story to share out.
Tech Fun: Make a podcast of personal story or a Flipgrid video.
