Tipi Audio Guide - Big Eyes versus Traders

A painted scene on a tan surface shows figures on horseback, some holding weapons, in red, blue, and brown. Horses and riders appear in motion near a yellow, circular border at the bottom.

Transcription

If you look at the lower portion of the tipi, you will see two groups of mounted horses facing one another. Although we don’t know the exact story behind this scene, we can tell that the Blackfeet on the right, which include Big Eyes, are fighting a group of white traders, shown on the left. The figures on the left are wearing western clothing and hats, which is a pictographic convention that is commonly used to depict white men. We can safely say they are traders. The horse on the far left has a pack on its back, further emphasizing who they are. This scene falls within our history because the Blackfeet often fought with other tribes and traders to protect their territory and resources.
