What is a Western? Film Series

This ongoing series explores the wide range of movies that can be considered Westerns, and the ways in which they shape our understanding of the American West. Each screening includes a guest lecturer who will introduce the film and explains its significance in the genre.

  • Screening of The Outlaw (1943)

    Threatened by the censors for violations of the Production Code, producer Howard Hughes encouraged a public outcry to pressure the studio into releasing his film. This classic example of courting controversy for publicity launched Jane Russell’s career as a sex symbol and Hollywood icon.

  • Double Feature: The Big Show (1936) and The Bronze Buckaroo (1939)

    This singing cowboy double feature showcases two influential figures: country music star Gene Autry, who co-founded the Autry Museum, and jazz singer-songwriter Herb Jeffries, “the Bronze Buckaroo,” who was most notable as a pioneer in breaking Hollywood’s color barriers.
