About the Event

The January and February edition of What Is a Western? explores the concept of the Western sidekick through two very different films, turning the spotlight onto the men and women relegated to supporting roles in other people’s epic stories. Both films begin with an introduction by Jared Moshé, director of The Ballad of Lefty Brown

Stagecoach (1939)
John Ford’s classic Western follows a motley group of strangers as they travel together through dangerous Apache territory. The epic that made John Wayne a global icon also introduced us to the quintessential sidekicks that would inhabit Hollywood’s West.
Directed by John Ford | Starring John Wayne, Claire Trevor, and Andy Devine | Screened in 35mm
