About the Event

Reminiscent of the Spaghetti Westerns of Sergio Leone, this tale of an assassin who comes out of retirement features vigilantism, stylized violence, and a reticent anti-hero with a code. The influence of all these genre tropes, despite the neo-noir setting, clearly begs the question: What is a Western?

Screening introduced by Liza Posas, Head of Research Services and Archives.

Directed by Chad Stahelski and David Leitch | Starring Keanu Reeves, Michael Nyqvist, and Alfie Allen
Rated R

The What Is a Western? Film Series explores the wide range of movies that can be considered Westerns, and the ways in which they shape our understanding of the American West. Each screening includes a guest lecturer who will introduce the film and explain its significance in the genre.
