About the Event

Is there such a thing as a noir Western? The Naked Spur, an Academy Award–winning Mann-Stewart collaboration, is often described as noir, with its shifting alliances, blurred moral lines, and Jimmy Stewart’s tortured anti-hero. Introduced by Suzanne Lummis, noir poet and host of the web series They Write by Night.

Directed by Anthony Mann | Starring James Stewart, Janet Leigh, and Robert Ryan

This ongoing series explores the wide range of movies that can be considered Westerns, and the ways in which they shape our understanding of the American West. Each screening includes a guest lecturer who will introduce the film and explains its significance in the genre.
