About the Event

Join us for a conversation with local archivists, artists, and researchers on the value of preserving the stories of our communities and the varied forms these archives take.

Los Angeles County has 88 incorporated cities and over 100 unincorporated communities, with an estimated 500 neighborhoods. They’ve always been a crucial part of what makes Los Angeles unique, but recent events such as the January wildfires have made it clear how fragile some of these communities are. What do community archives do, and how can you develop your own?

Panel includes:

Alejandra Martinez and Natasha Dominguez, Southeast Los Angeles Community Archive

Romeo Guzmán and Carribean Fragoza, South El Monte Arts Posse and editors of East of East: The Making of Greater El Monte

Becky Nicolaides, author of The New Suburbia: How Diversity Remade Suburban Life in Los Angeles After 1945

Moderated by Alejandra Gaeta, Autry Museum archivist librarian and chair of executive committee, LA as Subject

Land Acknowledgment

The Autry Museum of the American West acknowledges the Gabrielino/Tongva peoples as the traditional land caretakers of Tovaangar (the Los Angeles basin and So. Channel Islands). We recognize that the Autry Museum and its campuses are located on the traditional lands of Gabrielino/Tongva peoples and we pay our respects to the Honuukvetam (Ancestors), ‘Ahiihirom (Elders) and ‘Eyoohiinkem (our relatives/relations) past, present and emerging.
