Students will learn about personal identity by discovering who Mabel McKay, a Native Californian basket weaver from the 20th century, was through The Story of Mabel McKay video. After watching the video, students will explore their own personal identity through objects. Then students will create a drawing, painting, photograph, or video that represents their personal identity.

Teaching Tips for Different Learning Environments
Whole Class In-Person Learning: Discuss identity as a class in Part 1. For Part 2, put identity question boxes around the room and have students place responses in at least 3 boxes. Shake up the boxes and share out. Pick one or two answers to the questions and brainstorms as a class objects that could represent that aspect of identity. In Part 3, students work in pairs or groups to share their plan. Part 6 sharing out as a whole class, small groups or as a Gallery Walk.
Whole Class Distance Learning: Discuss identity as a class in Part 1. For Part 2, put identity questions on separate slides and ask students to add words and images to answer the questions. Present it to whole class then pick one or two answers to the questions and brainstorms as a class different objects that could represent that aspect of identity. In Part 3, students work in pairs or groups to share their plan. Part 6 sharing out as a whole class or in small groups breakout rooms.
Tech fun: Have students present their identity through Flipgrid, video, animation, digital storyboard or some other online presentation medium.
