Tipi Audio Guide - Cows

A simple drawing of a person in a hat holding a stick or rope, standing next to a black cow, with part of a reddish-brown animal to the right, all on a wrinkled, light-colored background.

Transcription

Big Eyes traveled quite a ways to get to Crow Country. He travelled all night and on his way back, he ran into a white man milking a cow at dawn. This may not be unusual for us today, but its inclusion on the tipi tells us that there were some farms in the area in the 1800s.

Land Acknowledgment

The Autry Museum of the American West acknowledges the Gabrielino/Tongva peoples as the traditional land caretakers of Tovaangar (the Los Angeles basin and So. Channel Islands). We recognize that the Autry Museum and its campuses are located on the traditional lands of Gabrielino/Tongva peoples and we pay our respects to the Honuukvetam (Ancestors), ‘Ahiihirom (Elders) and ‘Eyoohiinkem (our relatives/relations) past, present and emerging.
