Takes Care of Them

Opening November 2026

Irene Helen Jones Parks Gallery of Art

About the Exhibition

Dyani White Hawk’s (Sicangu Lakota) 2019 print series Takes Care of Them, reflects on women’s roles in four areas; Wówahokuŋkiya | Lead, Wókaǧe | Create, Nakíčižiŋ | Protect and Wačháŋtognaka | Nurture. Each large-scale print features a Lakota dress adorned differently, emphasizing the uniformity while also celebrating the complexity of this important garment. White Hawk’s work uses dresses as a medium to explore the use of color, texture, and iconography grounded in Lakota cultural knowledge. This print series illustrates the importance of women’s roles within the foundation of Plains culture and encourages the visitor to contemplate the beauty of their garments that directly relates to their roles.
