About the Event

Screened in 35mm!

COften considered a pioneering Noir Western, this tale of double crossing and rivalry on the range features femme fatale Veronica Lake as the strong-willed anti-heroine who manipulates the men around her to save her ranch from a ruthless cattle baron. Based on a story by Luke Short, director Andre De Toth stays faithful to the western genre while infusing it with noir elements, both visually and stylistically.

Introduced by Alan K. Rode, author and film noir historian

Directed by Andre De Toth | Starring Veronica Lake, Joel McCrea, and Don DeFore

The What is a Western? Film Series explores the wide range of movies that can be considered Westerns, and the ways in which they shape our understanding of the American West. Each screening includes a guest lecturer who will introduce the film and explain its significance in the genre.
