An illustration depicts a rural scene with a house on the right side on fire and a haystack burning in the distance on the left. The sky is filled with light-colored smoke, and the area appears to be a farmland with scattered buildings.

About the Event

Screened in 35mm!

Promoted as “a thrilling story of flaming hearts and blazing oil wells amid the frenzy of the Texas boom days” and based on the novel by one-time prospector and Olympic medal winner Rex Beach, Flowing Gold depicts a homesteading family who strike it rich in the North Texas oil boom. Rousing sequences—including terrifying thunderstorms and a massive oil fire—dazzle in this new tinted and toned restoration. The detailed sets are contemporaneous representations of the oil rigs of the time—industrial behemoths that create instantly recognizable Texan vistas. Flowing Gold is Joseph de Grasse’s penultimate film as director, coming at the end of a prolific career in silent cinema.

Directed by Joseph De Grasse | Starring Anna Q. Nilsson, Milton Sills, and Alice Calhoun

With live musical accompaniment by Cliff Retallick

35mm print provided by San Francisco Silent Film Festival. Restoration made possible with Support from the National Film Preservation Foundation
