About the Event

Screened in 35mm!

Join us for a powerful big-screen presentation of My Family/Mi Familia, an epic and deeply moving portrait of one Mexican American family and their enduring connection to Los Angeles.

Directed by Gregory Nava, the film follows the Sánchez family from their roots in Mexico to their lives in East Los Angeles, tracing decades of love, hardship, migration, and resilience.

Spanning the 1920s through the 1980s, the film illuminates how successive generations navigate questions of belonging, opportunity, and identity while confronting discrimination, labor struggles, and the changing social landscape of the city. Richly observed and deeply humane, My Family/Mi Familia captures Los Angeles as both a place of aspiration and a site of ongoing struggle.

Presented in connection with the exhibition Life, Liberty, and Los Angeles, this screening reflects on how families and communities have pursued dignity, security, and the promise of a better life while helping shape the history and culture of Los Angeles itself.

Screening followed by a conversation with cast members, led by film historian Luis Reyes

Directed by Gregory Nava | Starring Jimmy Smits, Esai Morales, Edward James Olmos, and Constance Marie

Runtime: 128 mins | Rated R

L.A. Stories on Screen brings together films from across decades and communities that reveal how the promise of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness has been imagined, challenged, and lived in Los Angeles, extending the themes of the exhibition Life, Liberty and Los Angeles.
