About the Event

Join prizewinning historian Kevin Waite for the remarkable story of Biddy Mason, who walked 3,000 miles from Georgia to California, endured enslavement in a state that had outlawed slavery, and ultimately won her freedom in a landmark court case.

In The Boundless Biddy Mason: An Odyssey from Slavery to Freedom Across the American West, Waite brings Mason’s remarkable journey to life, exploring how she overcame barriers of race and gender to become a healer, philanthropist, church founder, and real estate entrepreneur who helped shape Black Los Angeles. Through Mason’s story, Waite reveals both the far-reaching legacy of slavery and the hard-won possibilities of freedom in the American West.

Following the presentation, Kevin Waite will sign copies of the book, which is available for purchase in the Autry Store.
