About the Program

Through a partnership with the Kettering Foundation, the Autry created an issue guide titled Hetch Hetchy: How Do We Make the Best Use of Our Natural Resources? Created for middle and high school students, this issue guide serves as a blueprint to support student deliberation about the historical questions, “What should we do with the Hetch Hetchy Valley? What is the best use of our natural resources? How do we reconcile the competing claims of diverse populations? Whose needs should take precedence? These questions were debated on the floor of the U.S. Congress in 1913 as the Senate prepared to vote on the issue.

The program includes pre-and-post classroom activities, a 90-minute moderated deliberative forum held at the Autry, and a guided tour of the Human Nature gallery. Throughout this project, students will learn about the legislative process, water rights in California, the National Park Service, and the conservation movement in the United States. In addition to the content this program builds deliberative skills, fosters good listening, and promotes civil discourse.
