A group of four 19th-century gold prospectors, in rugged clothing and wide-brimmed hats, dig and sift through dirt with tools. Two men stand, one kneels, and another swings a pickaxe. Additional miners work in the background.

About the Event

Autry Educator’s Institute: Mining the Gold Rush for Broader Perspectives

Join us for the 2025 Autry Educator’s Institute: Mining the Gold Rush for Broader Perspectives. This three-day lecture series will give participants a closer look at the untold stories of the California Gold Rush and will provide educators with the resources to understand the experiences of diverse communities present in California, both in 1849 and today.

The workshop, July 8-10, will provide scholarly presentations, discussion, and resources. Participants will explore:

  • The experiences of diverse communities who participated in the Gold Rush, including African American, Chinese, Mexican, and Native American communities.
  • The environmental impacts of the Gold Rush.
  • The Gold Rush from a global perspective.
  • Why the Gold Rush still matters today.
