The Autry Museum of the American West Presents: Takes Care of Them

Four traditional Indigenous ribbon dresses in yellow, red, blue, and green, each featuring a white yoke and unique geometric or cross-shaped detailing at the hem.

(October 19, 2026—Los Angeles, CA) The Autry Museum of the American West invites you to its newest exhibition, Takes Care of Them. The exhibition title is borrowed from Dyani White Hawk’s (Sicangu Lakota) 2019 print series of the same name, which considers Lakota women’s kinship in four areas: Wówahokuŋkiya (Lead); Wókaǧe (Create); Nakíčižiŋ (Protect); and Wačháŋtognaka (Nurture). These screenprints illustrate the foundational roles that women have traditionally occupied and continue to play today. Their depth of color, texture, and subtle decorative differences visually reinforce the strength and beauty with which Native women care for their communities. White Hawk uses a Native dentalium dress from the Plains region to convey her message.

“The idea for this suite of four dresses came from the practice of requesting four veterans to stand in each cardinal direction for protection when particular ceremonies are taking place. My mother is a veteran. In thinking through the ways, the women in our lives stand guard, protect, and nurture our well-being, the idea for this set of four was born.” ―Dyani White Hawk
