1860; serial number 95844
Owner: Alabama Governor Andrew B. Moore
Inscribed: Andrew B. Moore, Gov. of Alabama / with compliments of Col. Colt
Manufacturer: Colt's Patent Fire Arms Manufacturing Company

Samuel Colt presented revolvers with personal inscriptions to prominent individuals he believed could help his company, either through promotion or directly through sales. In December 1860, Colt presented this Model 1851 Navy Revolver to Alabama Governor Andrew B. Moore. The state of Alabama was shopping for firearms in preparation for hostilities with the United States government, and Colt was ready to meet their needs. Once the Civil War began, however, Samuel Colt became a staunch supporter of the Union and all sales to the South ceased. Colt’s Patent Fire Arms Manufacturing Company played such an important role in arming Union forces during the war that the factory in Hartford, Connecticut, was set on fire in February 1864, presumably by Southern saboteurs.
