I usually paint eighteenth-century scenes, but this painting includes a mid-nineteenth-century lamp that was always on a shelf or in a cabinet or on a mantle throughout my childhood. Although I know nothing of its real history, it’s now mine. One day, one of my collectors expressed an interest in taking up painting and wanted me to show him how. Yikes! I am not a teacher, so I chose a simple subject—one figure and my lamp—and as I created this painting I recorded each step-by-step progression for him. However, I still don’t know how to teach; maybe I can just answer his questions?
