About the Event
This ongoing series explores the wide range of movies that can be considered a Western. Each screening begins with a brief introduction from the guest curator.
Gold, oil, blood. Western films abound with dreams of striking it rich by pulling treasure from the landscape. Curated by Josh Garrett-Davis, the Autry’s Gamble Assistant Curator of Western History, Popular Culture, and Firearms, the films in September, October, and November explore how characters respond to “booms” in natural resources. In conjunction with the LA RAZA exhibition, these films also demonstrate the deep Western interconnections across the U.S.-Mexico border.
Inspired by The Treasure of the Sierra Madre and Upton Sinclair’s novel Oil!, this modern classic depicts the oil boom that gushed upward in Southern California in the early twentieth century. The promises and challenges of liquid gold strain the bonds of family and character.
Projected in 35 mm | Directed by Paul Thomas Anderson | Starring Daniel Day-Lewis and Paul Dano | Rated R
