This past April, I spent time in Mexico in the small village of Guadalupe Coronado at the base of Urique Canyon. Anticipation of the Easter celebrations was in the air among the people of this tiny Tarahumaran community. Semana Santa (Holy Week) is one of the most important celebrations throughout Mexico. As the festivities commenced, there was one man that really stood out to me: the violin player who led the musicians that marched through the town. Their music reverberated off the canyon walls as the people danced in front of the town’s church. The violinist had a proud, strong demeanor about him that was inspiring.
