In my sculpture Elegance I chose to use the scissor-tailed flycatcher, as it is the most elegant bird I know of. Its long tail and physical design make it the perfect subject. The bird is 14 inches long, with the tail making up 8–10 inches of that length. I see 50 to 100 of these little birds every summer, usually sitting on the top wire of a fence or catching an insect on the wing. They are also known for their courtship flight, in which the male flies straight up in the air.
