Hare-Raisin' Ride

Artwork Image:

One of the reasons I love Western art is because it usually tells a story—sometimes dramatic or action filled, at other times emotional or serene, and often humorous. Charlie Russell’s and George Phippen’s paintings and sculptures of the humorous side of the West inspired me to portray humor in some of my own bronzes. I wanted this sculpture to link back to that long tradition of humor in Western art. It depicts a hard-working cowboy riding a young colt outside of the corral for the first time. Unexpectedly, he rides past a bush full of hiding jackrabbits that flush out like a covey of quail, which begins this “hare-raisin’ ride.”
