Please join us for a stimulating salon and cocktail reception featuring historians Stephen Aron, Virginia Scharff, and Josh Garrett-Davis. Aron, Scharff, and Garrett-Davis will share their takeaways from the Contested Commemorations symposium, a gathering of scholars convened by the Clements Center at Southern Methodist University and the Autry Museum (and funded by the Mellon Foundation). They will discuss (and lead a discussion of) the ways that history and public memory are debated in museums, monuments, memorials, archives, and other sites. Aron, Scharff, and Garrett-Davis will also share how these issues and ideas inform the exhibition Human Events: The View from Los Angeles, which will open at the Autry Museum in 2026 and which commemorates the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence from a western American perspective.
