About the Event
California was a free state in name only. Author Kevin Waite reveals how Southern slaveholders infiltrated the American West in the decade before the Civil War. They passed slave codes in Utah and New Mexico, sponsored separatist movements in Southern California and Arizona, orchestrated a territorial purchase from Mexico, and even killed antislavery rivals. Collectively, their efforts transformed California and the Far Southwest into a political appendage of the plantation states, and triggered a series of conflicts that culminated in the Civil War. As Waite argues, the struggle over slavery played out on a transcontinental stage.
