About the Event

Shonda Buchanan’s memoir explores her family’s legacy of being African Americans with American Indian roots and how they dealt with not just society’s ostracization but the consequences of this dual inheritance. Using one family’s history rather than aiming to represent every American’s multiethnic experience, Buchanan documents the physical, spiritual, and emotional displacement of American Indians who married mixed or Black slaves and indentured servants at America’s early crossroads.

Buchanan will also read from her collection of poetry, Who’s Afraid of Black Indians?, and sign copies of her book following the program.
