About the Event

As the inspiration for the popular HBO series, this cult classic is an iconic cautionary tale about our fascination with and fear of technology. The film follows a group of guests through an immersive amusement park, all staffed by lifelike robots who fulfill the guests’ darkest desires. As the program that operates the machines in the park begins to malfunction with disastrous results, the film becomes a lens for thinking about genre and special effect, the real and the artificial, progress and nostalgia.

Introduced by Julia Tcharfas, artist, writer and Collections Cataloger at the Autry.
Directed by Michael Crichton | Starring Yul Brynner, Richard Benjamin, and James Brolin

The What is a Western? Film Series explores the wide range of movies that can be considered Westerns, and the ways in which they shape our understanding of the American West. Each screening includes a guest lecturer who will introduce the film and explain its significance in the genre.
