About the Event

Often described as ‘King Lear in the desert’, this remake of the noir film House of Strangers is a dramatic narrative of family betrayal which also address racism and environmental pollution in the American West. Winner of an Academy Award for Best Story and Best Supporting Actress nomination for Mexican actress Katy Jurado, the film also won a Golden Globe for Promoting International Understanding 

Introduced by Anthony Macias, author of Chicano-Chicana Americana: Pop Culture Pluralism Starring Anthony Quinn, Katy Jurado, Robert Beltran, and Lupe Ontiveros. Screening followed by a book signing.

The What is a Western? Film Series explores the wide range of movies that can be considered Westerns, and the ways in which they shape our understanding of the American West. Each screening includes a guest lecturer who will introduce the film and explain its significance in the genre.
