Programs and Tours

Whether for public, private, or home-school educators, Autry Education programs are designed to provide a high-quality learning experience while maintaining the fun, hands-on atmosphere that makes the field trip experience so rewarding.

The tours and programs listed below are available for the 2016-17 school year during which the Autry will make select programs and tours available in a special afternoon schedule for schools, scouting groups, home-school educators, and groups.

All guided tours are 55 minutes long, unless otherwise noted. Complete the reservation form on this page to book a school tour or program.

  • Lights, Camera, Cowboy

    Lights, Camera . . . Cowboy!

    • Grades: K-2nd Grades
    • Days: Tuesday–Fridays
    • Times: 10:00 a.m., 11:15 a.m., and 1:00 p.m.
    • Maximum: 20 students per hour

    Cowboys occupy an important place in the West, including in the movies! Students will compare the mythical image of the cowboy as a heroic movie character with the reality of everyday cowboy life as they explore our permanent galleries and hands-on cowboy gear.

  • Animals of the West

    Animals of the West

    • Grades: K-2nd Grades
    • Days: Tuesday–Fridays
    • Times: 10:00 a.m., 11:15 a.m., and 1:00 p.m.
    • Maximum: 20 students per hour

    Students will meet some of the animals that call the West home. Encounter a Texas Longhorn steer and a bison in the permanent galleries, and learn about the important role animals played in Western cultures.

  • Sculpture Explorers

    Sculpture Explorers

    • Grades: K-2nd Grades
    • Days: Tuesdays–Fridays
    • Times: 10:00 a.m., 11:15 a.m., and 1:00 p.m.
    • Maximum: 20 students per hour

    What are sculptures? How are they made? Who makes them? Students will uncover the answers to these questions as they investigate a diverse collection of sculptures throughout the museum.

  • Docent-Guided Early Opportunities Program

    Docent-Guided Early Opportunities Program

    • Grades: K-2nd Grades
    • Days: First and third Wednesdays and Thursdays of the month
    • Times: 10:00 a.m. and 11:15 a.m.
    • Maximum: 30 students per hour

    In this hands-on program led by our trained museum docents, young students will investigate replica artifacts and role-play to discover the history of Western communities, Plains Indians, and cowboys and cowgirls.

  • Self-Guided Visit

    Self-Guided Visit

    • Grades: K-2nd Grades, 3rd-6th Grades, 7th-12th Grades
    • Days: Tuesday–Fridays
    • Times: Beginning at 12:15 p.m.
    • Maximum: 120 students per hour

    Teachers who wish to spend additional time in the museum or who want to explore on their own may reserve a self-guided visit. For self-guided visits, we require one chaperone for every eight students. Scavenger hunts, which can be downloaded, copied, and used during your visit, are available here.
