Planning Your Visit

How do I schedule a tour and/or program?

Please contact the Autry's School Tour and Group Sales Manager, Janet Jung, at schooltours@theautry.org or call 323.495.4336. You will receive an e-mail confirmation regarding your tour and/or program. Field trip guidelines and charges will be sent to you prior to your visit. Please call if you do not receive this information.

How much do tours and/or programs cost?

All school tour programs cost $2 per person. This includes all attending students, teachers, and chaperones. We accept cash, credit cards, and checks at the time of arrival. Please make checks payable to Autry Museum of the American West. We do not accept purchase orders. Membership benefits may not be used for school visits.

What time should I arrive at the Autry?

Please plan to arrive at least 30 minutes prior to your scheduled program to check in and pay for your tour. Most programs begin promptly at 10:00 a.m., 11:15 a.m., and 1:00 p.m., and each lasts approximately 55 minutes. Programs that begin after 10:00 a.m. due to late arrival will not extend beyond their originally scheduled time.

Where can we eat lunch?

The Autry has no indoor eating facilities. Most of the year, school groups are invited to enjoy their lunch on the South Lawn. All lunches and other consumable items must be stored on the bus or in the cubbies located next to the Education Building. Box lunches may be preordered from Crossroads West Cafe. For more information, contact the cafe at 323.495.43.29.

What if it rains?

School programs and tours will continue as scheduled, but may be modified if they take place outside. Please note that we do not have indoor eating facilities. If it is raining during your visit, we recommend eating lunch on the bus or after your return to school.

How many chaperones should I bring?

We require one chaperone for every eight students for self-guided visits. Chaperones and teachers are responsible for their group's behavior at the museum.

Is there a store?

Yes. The Autry Store is open and available to students during their visit. Students will find reasonably priced souvenirs and gifts such as classic wooden toys, beaded items, sheriff's badges, and musical instruments. Only one group of eight students, accompanied by a chaperone, is allowed in the store at one time. Time is limited to five minutes per group if there is a line of students waiting to enter the store.

To enjoy the museum and keep our collection safe, please note the following:

  • Backpacks, large purses, and similar items are not allowed in the museum and should be left on the bus or at school.
  • Food, beverages, and gum are not allowed inside the museum.
  • Photography is not allowed in our temporary exhibitions in the George Montgomery Gallery and Norman F. Sprague, Jr. Gallery. Nonflash photography is allowed in our permanent galleries. Please check with your museum teacher or docent before taking pictures.
  • Use pencils for writing or sketching. Crayons, pens, markers, and wet materials are not allowed in the museum. Note-taking and sketching are not permitted during docent-guided tours.
  • The museum is open to the public during school programs and/or tours and we ask for your cooperation to ensure that all visitors—whether part of student programs or the general public—enjoy their museum experience.
