Store your phone or eyeglasses in this cheerful case, inspired by the Autry’s extensive collection of citrus crate labels.

Designed to distinguish the produce harvested by different companies, the citrus crate labels also promoted an idealized California Dream, with its warm climate and lush groves of orange trees. Learn more about these crate labels and see some additional images here.

Joining squares

Arrange squares in two pairs.

For each pair of squares, sew one side of two squares together so that there are now two rectangles.

Joining rectangles

With wrong side of rectangles facing each other, use contrasting yarn to create border. Working through the thickness of both rectangles simultaneously, begin at what will be the open end of the pouch on the upper right corner, work sc in each st across the long length of the rectangle, 2 sc in the corner, sc in each st down to the bottom left corner, 2 sc in the corner, sc in each st across to the bottom rt corner, sc in corner through both thicknesses. Work a second sc through the top panel only, sc in each st on the top piece up to top rt corner. Flip piece over vertically. Work sc in each each st on back piece. Join with sl st to 1st sc made in top panel only.  Fasten off.

Leaf (optional)

With green yarn, chain 7.

First side of ch: Sl st in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next ch, hdc in next ch, 2 dc in next ch, (dc, hdc) in next st, sc in last ch, ch 1, turn.

Working down other side of ch:  sk ch, sc in next ch, (hdc, dc) in next ch, 2 dc in next ch, hdc in next ch, sc in next ch, sl st in last ch, ch 1, turn.

Working down center of leaf, stem: Sk ch, 6 sc down center of leaf, ch 2. Fasten off leaving four-inch tail.

Attach to orange as desired.

Sew in all ends.
