Ken Maynard was a cowboy star of the late silent and early sound eras, and one of the best horsemen in Westerns. Although he was not the first cowboy to sing onscreen, he is often credited as the first singing cowboy. Like many cowboys of his generation, both onscreen and off, Maynard got a lot of his gear from the shop of Edward Bohlin, "saddlemaker to the stars." The sterling silver grips with 10-karat-gold steer heads were made by the Bohlin shop. The engraving was the work of Texan Cole Agee. It is believed that Agee’s wife suggested using Texas cattle brands, and he turned to the book A Century of Texas Cattle Brands for inspiration. The final product included numerous brands complemented with sprigs of scroll.
