Leo Carrillo was an actor and conservationist. He is probably best remembered for playing the role of Pancho, the sidekick of the Cisco Kid. Carrillo first played the character on film, and in 1950, at the age of seventy, he reprised the role for the popular The Cisco Kid television series. Carrillo used this Single Action Army on film and in parades. The actor’s greatest passion was conservation. He served on the California Beach and Parks commission for eighteen years and was instrumental in the state’s acquisition of the Hearst Castle and the Los Angeles Arboretum. In honor of his service, the state of California named a stretch of beach west of Malibu, off the Pacific Coast Highway, the Leo Carrillo State Park.
