#3 of 14 Speed Versus Accuracy
Circa 1878; serial numbers M
Manufacturer: Colt's Patent Fire Arms Manufacturing Company
87.118.75
The Model 1878 Frontier was Colt’s first heavy-frame, double-action revolver. More than 51,000 of the fixed cylinder revolvers were manufactured from 1878 to 1905. The introduction of swing-out-cylinder Colt revolvers in 1889 and their subsequent popularity ultimately made the earlier models obsolete. This unique display case contains model guns on three variations of the Model 1878 Frontier, along with parts, gauges, and other related artifacts. The top revolver is one of only two known Flattop Target versions of the Model 1878 Frontier. The center revolver is one of approximately four known Model 1878 Frontiers in a hammerless design. The bottom revolver, the only variation found in the case that was mass produced, is the model gun for the Sheriff’s Model 1878 Frontier.
