Two Gene Autry films are screened on the first Saturday of every month in the Imagination Gallery’s Western Legacy Theater. In December’s films, Prairie Moon and The Cowboy and the Indians, you’ll find Gene dealing with children both naughty and nice, and hear him on the radio with his holiday song “Here Comes Santa Claus (Right Down Santa Claus Lane).”
Prairie Moon (Republic Pictures, 1938)
Deputy Sheriff Gene Autry and his pal, Frog Millhouse, are baffled by continued cattle raids, where the stock vanishes into thin air. Unbeknownst to them, Frank Welch, the proprietor of the general store, is head of the gang of cattle rustlers. City gangster Legs Barton learns the rustlers are using his property for their activities. Barton is then mortally wounded and makes a dying request of Gene to look after his three orphaned children. Gene sends Frog to New York to get the kids.

The Cowboy and the Indians (Columbia Pictures, 1949)
Rancher Gene Autry tries to aid neighboring Navajos suffering from malnutrition, but he is opposed by the crafty and crooked trading post proprietor Martin. Soon the Navajo chief is found unconscious with his priceless turquoise necklace stolen, and Lakohna, next in line to be chief, is falsely blamed. Gene and Lakohna combine forces to take down Martin and help the starving tribe. Sheila Ryan, Clayton Moore, and Jay Silverheels round out the cast of this modern story with Old West thrills. This is the only film in which Gene sings his holiday classic “Here Comes Santa Claus (Right Down Santa Claus Lane)”.
