"Homage to Siqueiros" Poetry Reading by Rose Portillo & Yareli Arizmendi and Music Performance by Mark Guerrero.
Performances will take place at Noon and 2:00 p.m.
Yareli Arizmendi (best known for "Like Water for Chocolate") and Rose Portillo of About Productions perform an in-gallery, bilingual reading of the poem "Rey David" (King David) written by Uruguayan poet Blanca Luz Brum, second wife of Mexican muralist David Alfaro Siqueiros. Mark Guerrero, son of famed musician Lalo Guerrero, will also premiere an acoustical performance of his new song, "White Wash."
Siqueiros and Brum married in a civil ceremony on October 4, 1932, in Los Angeles--- five days before the public opening of the "América Tropical" mural at Olvera Street. By late November, their 6-month visa now expired and the request for extension denied by the INS, they boarded the SS West Nilus. They sailed from San Pedro, bidding farewell to friends and grim-faced INS agents, bound for Argentina. Siqueiros and Brum separated in 1934.
Mark Guerrero began playing in rock & roll bands at age 12 and led the popular East Los Angeles band Mark & the Escorts, who recorded two singles for G.N.P. Crescendo Records in 1965. He has recorded as a solo artist for Ode Records in 1971 (produced by the legendary Lou Adler), Capitol Records in 1972, and with his group Tango for A&M Records in 1973. His songs have been recorded by artists such as Herb Alpert, Trini Lopez, Chan Romero, and his late father, Lalo Guerrero. Mark has performed on stage with artists such as Eric Burdon, El Chicano, Tierra, Redbone, and Lalo Guerrero. He also hosts a popular Chicano music website, www.markguerrero.com, which is dedicated to promoting and chronicling Mark's music and history, as well as the history of Chicano music in general. On the subject of Chicano music, Mark Guerrero has lectured at universities, consulted for museums, and hosted an internet radio show called "Chicano Music Chronicles.” Mark is currently performing as a solo artist and with his band, the Mark Guerrero Band.
