Virginia Scharff, Autry Chair of Western Women’s History, will lead a discussion with former Butcher Scholars Flannery Burke and Michelle Nickerson, and Anne F. Hyde, the Autry’s 2012 Butcher Scholar, on her Bancroft Prize–winning book, Empire, Nations, and Families: A New History of the North American West, 1800–1860. This book represents an innovation in Western history, placing gender scholarship in the larger history of the American West. Through the Butcher Scholar Award, the Autry supports original research projects that deepen the understanding of the history of diverse women in the historical and contemporary West. A book signing follows the program.
