The Wild Bunch (1969) in 35mm
Directed by Sam Peckinpah
Starring William Holden, Ernest Borgnine, Robert Ryan, and Edmund O’Brien
The Western genre has been defined by the work of several notable directors, including Sam Peckinpah. Keenly aware of the history and tradition of the Western, his innovative interpretation of traditional Western themes revolutionized the genre, and his graphic and explicit depiction of violence continues to be controversial.
Peckinpah made several great Westerns, but he is best remembered for The Wild Bunch. In the film, a group of aging outlaws attempt to rob a railway office but are ambushed by bounty hunters. Only a few of the robbers survive, and they are pursued as they make their way south. Caught in the chaos of the Mexican Revolution, the outlaws find themselves in an untenable situation that leads to a violent and bloody final confrontation.
Jeffrey Richardson, Gamble Curator of Western History, Popular Culture & Firearms, will lead a discussion of the film’s history and its place within the Western genre prior to the screening. Also, be sure to visit the Autry’s Imagination Gallery, an ongoing exhibition devoted to the Western. Putting the genre into a larger historical context, the gallery shows how the Western evolved in response to social and cultural changes taking place in America during the twentieth century.
