Many genres have used the themes and character types that originated with the Western. On a few notable occasions, the opposite was true and the Western borrowed elements traditionally found in other genres. Such is the case with The Magnificent Seven, a remake of Japanese filmmaker Akira Kurosawa’s The Seven Samurai (1954).
In The Magnificent Seven, a group of Mexican peasants hire seven American gunfighters to help protect them from a gang of one hundred bandits. The gunfighters teach the peasants how to defend themselves, but they quickly realize that the peasants may not be willing to make the necessary sacrifices. Facing overwhelming odds, the gunfighters ultimately must decide if they will run or if they will fight the menacing bandits.
Jeffrey Richardson, Associate Curator of Western History and Popular Culture, will lead a discussion of the film’s history prior to the screening. After the screening, please visit the Autry’s Imagination Gallery, an exploration of the Western genre. Putting the Western into a larger historical context, the gallery shows how the genre evolved in response to social and cultural changes taking place in America during the twentieth century.
