Two Gene Autry films are screened on the first Saturday of every month in the Imagination Gallery’s Western Legacy Theater. Gene Autry’s Westerns are known for their music, comedy, and action. February’s films each feature funny and talented sidekicks of Gene Autry. Smiley Burnette brings his musical and physical humor to Home in Wyomin’, and comedian Sterling Holloway provides the comic relief in Twilight on the Rio Grande.

Home in Wyomin’ (Republic Pictures, 1942)

At the Frontier Days pageant in Wyoming, radio star Gene Autry must solve a murder mystery that involves a newspaper photographer, Chicago gangsters, a deserted mine—and has a surprise ending. Smiley Burnette, Gene’s sidekick in sixty films, plays his popular character Frog Millhouse in this musical Western. Twilight on the Rio Grande (Republic Pictures, 1947)

Gene Autry’s investigation of the murder of his partner, Dusty, leads him to Mexico, where he becomes involved with the beautiful singer Elena del Rio, whose father has also been killed. Suspecting that the murders are related, Gene discovers that a jewelry smuggling ring is behind the nefarious business. Sterling Holloway, who appeared in Gene’s five post-WWII Westerns, plays sidekick Pokie.
