Two Gene Autry films are screened on the fourth Saturday of every month in the Imagination Gallery’s Western Legacy Theater. Perhaps you’ve heard Gene sing “A man’s best friend is his horse.” January’s films showcase his horse, Champion. In the film Comin’ ’Round the Mountain, Champion portrays the wild horse El Diablo and battles wolves, partakes in a cross-country race, and helps Gene expose the bad guys. Then, in Rim of the Canyon Champion is stolen, and Gene’s search for his horse leads him to a ghost town haunted by thieves and decades-old pilfered money.
Comin’ ‘Round the Mountain (Republic Pictures, 1936)
When Pony Express Rider Gene Autry’s horse is shot from under him, he soon finds and gains the confidence of the wild horse El Diablo. Searching for his attackers who also stole his mail sack of money, Gene encounters a scheming rancher selling thoroughbred horses, a beautiful rancher selling wild mustangs and everyone competes in a cross-country race to prove their horses are the best. Of course, Gene finds time along the way to sing a few songs, battle the bad guys, and fall in love!

Rim of the Canyon (Columbia Pictures, 1949)
Gene Autry, searching for his stolen horse Champion, is stranded in a ghost town haunted by thieves, who are searching for $30,000 stolen twenty years earlier from Big Tim. A bookish schoolteacher who claims to have talked to the long-believed dead Big Tim aids Gene with his search for the outlaws and the long-lost treasure. Gene’s as fast as a phantom on the draw as he and Champion smoke out ghost town desperadoes in this 1949 Columbia Western.
