The Autry celebrates this Mexican tradition in which children portray Mary and Joseph seeking shelter in Bethlehem as baby Jesus is about to be born, while innkeepers urge them in song to move on. The evening features dance by Grandeza Mexicana Folk Ballet Company, performance by Harmonies Girls Choir, and traditional Christmas songs in Spanish by Linda Straley and Hector Marquez.
The audience joins in this interactive celebration to learn cantos de las posadas (songs of las posadas), then follow as members of Grandeza Mexicana and Harmonies Girls Choir lead a procession through the museum, recreating Mary and Joseph's journey. The procession ends outside in the Plaza, where Grandeza Mexicana and Harmonies Girls Choir will perform La Pastorela, a comic play that depicts—through music, humor, and dance—the pilgrimage of the shepherds who travel to Bethlehem to see baby Jesus. After the performance, hot chocolate and Mexican sweet bread will be served for everyone to enjoy.
Come early and join us for Western Heritage Family Day, a special day of stories, music, and crafts as we celebrate the holidays and ring in the New Year!
