Bill Phillips has had a love affair with flight for as long as he can remember. His first attempts at depicting aircraft in an artistic way came when he was 12 years old. He and a friend would go down to the Van Nuys Airport and spend the day watching the California Air National Guard F-86 Sabres land and take off. By the time he got home he was so excited he would spend the rest of the afternoon trying to sketch what he had seen.

Phillips’s love of flight led him into the Air Force, and he served a tour of duty in Vietnam. On discharge from the service he entered college, studying to become an attorney. In 1971 he changed direction and decided to dedicate his energies to becoming an artist—a career that has taken him throughout the world for research.

He has had a one-man show at the National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C., and has won many awards for public service and outstanding achievements in the field of art. In April of this year, Phillips was invited to and had work shown at the Art Center of Battle Creek, Michigan, and he showed three pieces at the first invitational New Masters of the Grand Canyon show at the Grand Canyon South Rim. He was also featured in the August 2009 issue of Western Art Collector magazine.

September 11, 2001, hit Phillips very hard emotionally. Out of his distress came the painting A Prayer for My Brother, which was made into a large-canvas print. This piece has been placed in many of the fire departments across the country, with a portion of the proceeds going to help families of fallen firefighters.

William S. Phillips is represented by Settlers West Galleries Inc., Tucson, Arizona. Giclée reproductions of his work are available through Greenwich Workshop dealers.
