Robert Griffing
< >Robert Griffing studied illustration and design at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh and went on to enjoy a 30-year career in advertising. His lifelong interest in Native American and colonial history was the result of growing up in Western Pennsylvania, where many 18th-century historical events took place. He still resides there with his wife, Justine.
Today Griffing paints the Native Americans of the Great Lakes and Eastern Woodlands and depicts how they dealt with European contact. His work has been included in educational packages, a number of TV historical documentaries, and on the covers of national magazines.
He also has the support of several Native American groups and has donated images to be used as murals and framed prints for display in their museums and cultural centers. Griffing had a great year in 2008. At the Autry National Center of the American West’s Masters of the American West Fine Art Exhibition and Sale he received the Masters of the American West Purchase Award for his painting Council at Slippery Rock Creek. Later in the year, at the Quest for the West Art Show and Sale at the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art, Indianapolis, Indiana, he received the Harrison Eiteljorg Purchase Award for his painting Secrets of the Dark Forest.
Griffing exhibits at all the Settlers West shows, including the Coeur d’Alene Art Auction in Reno; the Western Visions Miniatures Show in Jackson, Wyoming; the Autry National Center of the American West’s Masters of the American West Fine Art Exhibition and Sale in Los Angeles; and the Renaissance Sale at Morris and Whiteside Galleries in Hilton Head, South Carolina. More details about the artist and his paintings can be found in the book The Art of Robert Griffing, which has sold more than 12,000 copies worldwide, and in his newest release, The Narrative Art of Robert Griffing. Paramount Press, Inc. published the books and produces prints of his work.
