Robert Duncan
< >Robert Duncan was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, in 1952 and is the eldest in a family of ten children. He spent the summers helping his grandparents on their 10,000-acre cattle ranch in Wyoming; the Green River ran through their land from its source high in the Rocky Mountains. The ranch was surrounded by beautiful open country, and he fell in love with the rural lifestyle. He drew constantly from the age of five, and when he was eleven his grandmother gave him his first set of paints and paid for three oil painting lessons.
He studied art at the University of Utah and worked for a short time as a commercial artist before his full-time dedication to the fine art of the American West. Duncan has traveled extensively throughout his career to visit museums and study the great artists he admires. His travels have included journeys to Russia, Scandinavia, many trips to Europe, and frequent trips to the East Coast and Canada.
Duncan met John Clymer, who became a huge influence and dear friend. Through Clymer, he was introduced to and elected into the Cowboy Artists of America at age 29, and he won two silver medals in its annual exhibition at the Phoenix Art Museum. After five and a half years with the Cowboy Artists, he decided to resign in order to broaden his subject matter and devote more time to painting his family and the rural lifestyle that he felt was fast disappearing.
Duncan and his wife, Linda, have six children and ten grandchildren. They, along with a lively assortment of animals, live in the small town of Midway in northern Utah. Duncan started his own print business, Robert Duncan Studios, nearly ten years ago, and three of his children and Linda run the business in their beautiful new gallery and offices on Main Street in their little hometown. He has published more than 140 images of his work as well as two yearly calendars and many cards.
Robert Duncan is represented by Trailside Galleries, Jackson, Wyoming, and Scottsdale, Arizona.
