    Richard D. Thomas has been painting professionally for 30 years. A loose and painterly realist with a flexible approach to concept, Thomas is nationally recognized for his images of the contemporary working cowboy, pastoral landscapes, and Plains Indians.

    A native of California, Thomas graduated from Arizona State University in 1961 and was commissioned in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1962, serving in Vietnam in 1965.

    One of the original Top 100 selected in the 1987 and 1988 Arts for the Parks competition, Thomas was a regional winner in 1988. This primarily self-taught, prolific, and disciplined artist is a regular participant in various invitational shows throughout the country, including the prestigious National Museum of Art in Jackson, Wyoming; the Artists of America Show in Denver, Colorado; and the Masters of the American West Fine Art Exhibition and Sale at the Autry National Center of the American West. He also has had 25 solo gallery exhibitions over the course of his career. In 2003, he was featured in the periodicals Art of the West and Southwest Art. Recently, Thomas won the Jurors’ Best of Show award at the 2007 C. M. Russell Art Auction in Great Falls, Montana.

    He and his wife, Jan, and their extended family of horses, dogs, and cats reside on their ranch in Cardwell, Montana.
