Kevin Red Star
< >Intensely brilliant colors and mystical light: such is the mastery of Kevin Red Star. This internationally acclaimed artist draws from his Crow tradition and culture for his subjects, both historical and modern. His works are as universal as they are personal.
Born in 1943 on the Crow Indian Reservation in Lodge Grass, Montana, Red Star was raised—along with eight siblings—by parents who nurtured the artistic talents of their children. Not only were his parents supportive, but the Crow people themselves are also highly respected for support of family, artistic abilities, and commitment to education. From Red Star’s heritage come the subjects of his original artworks. He sees himself as a recorder of the Crow Nation’s vanishing culture—and as an artist working to satisfy his own creative expression. His philosophy parallels that of Robert Rauschenberg: “There should be no barriers in art.”
Red Star has been painting and exhibiting his work for over 30 years and is considered a historian and ambassador for his Native Crow culture. Kevin Red Star originals may be seen at the IAIA, Santa Fe, New Mexico; the Denver Art Museum; the Heard Museum, Phoenix, Arizona; the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art, Indianapolis; and the Smithsonian Institution. Internationally, his work is in such fine collections as Espace Pierre Cardin, Paris; the Liege Museum, Belgium; the Peking National Art Gallery, China; and other museums in Germany and Japan. Red Star participated in an exchange program and completed his residency at the Russian Academy of Art. He is the recipient of many prestigious awards and an Honorary Doctorate in Fine Art from Rocky Mountain College, Billings, Montana.
Red Star been featured in many publications, such as Arizona Highways, Native Peoples, and Southwest Art, and he was recently interviewed as the subject of a biographical book and a filmed documentary.
Kevin Red Star is represented by Legacy Gallery, Scottsdale, Arizona, and Jackson, Wyoming.
