THE MISSION of the Women of
the West Museum is to discover, explore, and communicate the continuing roles of women in shaping the American West.
Expanded Visions: Four Women Artists Print the American West fulfills our mission through the creation of four
original works of art by acclaimed contemporary artists. Emmi Whitehorse,
Anita Rodriguez, Hung Liu, and Alison Saar
worked with master printmaker Bud Shark to interpret aspects of our American heritage and culture.
Taken together, these striking images recall specific historical occurrences, landscapes, and cultural
traditions peculiar to the American West. They also speak to the broader themes of history, memory, the
power of place, the stages of life and death, and women's roles and relationships.
In their aesthetic vitality, diversity, and unexpected imagery, these prints evoke tradition but are clearly of this time; they challenge our stereotyped notions of the art of the American West. They echo and complement the stories--in oral history, diary, poetry, painting, scholarly chronicle, and song--
of other women represented in the exhibits and programs of the Women of the West Museum.
The stories are complex and multi-layered, enriching our understanding of our communities, our region, our nation, our families, and ourselves.
Expanded Visions is the brainchild of Joan Markowitz, who chaired the museum's art committee from 1996 to 1998 and subsequently came on board to manage the project. Markowitz, an experienced curator, conceived and shaped the project, identified and contacted the artists, organized
related programs and events, and has overseen Expanded Visions throughout. She has been the talented and knowledgeable key to the project's success, and she deserves our gratitude. Bud Shark of Shark's, Ink. brought his enormous expertise in printmaking to the project. His commitment to artistic innovation, technical excellence, and the power of collaboration is evident throughout Expanded Visions. We extend our thanks to University of Colorado Professor of Fine Arts
Erika Doss, who wrote the introductory essay that places this project in its broader cultural context. Thanks, too, to art historian Dinah Zeiger, who interviewed the artists and authored the individual artists' essays, and to Ann Douden for her striking catalogue design. On the Women of the West Museum staff, Betsy Armstrong supervised the publication of this volume with taste, expertise,
and her usual superb attention to detail.
Finally, our thanks go to each of the artists. Emmi Whitehorse, Anita Rodriguez, Hung Liu, and Alison Saar
brought their extraordinary gifts to Expanded Visions. Each work sings with energy and conviction and reflects the artist's personal style and broad cultural insights. In collaborating
on this historic project for the Women of the West Museum, these artists are truly pioneers. Their inspiring works convey the power and possibility
of this enterprise as well as that of the lives of
the women we remember and commemorate.
